MiniMatters recently developed a new AI Policy for Video Production, in recognition that AI is quickly transforming many elements of video production.

AI has the potential to affect the content of our videos, such as the way AI can be used for writing and scripting; for generating imagery through graphics, photos, and video; and for creating voiceovers and music.

AI also can affect the way we produce videos technically, by being able to streamline certain tasks like creating closed captions, making color corrections, or improving audio. Many of these capabilities provide great benefits, saving time and allowing us to execute tasks more easily or better. Some AI capabilities, though, potentially threaten values we hold, such as credibility and creativity.

So, how do we balance these considerations? MiniMatters has gone through a long and thoughtful process to articulate what we value and how that plays out in terms of how we use AI. The fruit of those efforts is MiniMatters’ AI Policy for Video Production, which we’re happy to share with our customers, partners, and other companies.

For MiniMatters, along with other video production companies and creative agencies, a carefully considered AI policy can provide a roadmap for navigating the twisty-turny route ahead. And it lets our customers know what they can expect from us.

Here's a brief outline of two key components of our Policy: Principles and Practices.

Our principles shape our AI Policy

In the MiniMatters AI Policy, the practices and uses of AI that we choose to adopt follow from and are based on our principles. For us, our principles related to AI include:

• Thinking independently
• Supporting creative people and their employment
• Valuing honesty
• Caring for the environment
• Respecting privacy and intellectual property
• Encouraging diversity of thought
• Seeking accuracy and verification
• Producing high-quality work products and services

Our AI practices are based on our principles

Based on our principles, we articulate the practices and ways in which we'll use AI in the areas of:

• AI Video Scripting
• AI Creation of New Graphics, Photos, and Footage
• AI Editing of Existing Graphics, Photos, and Footage
• AI Voiceovers
• AI Music and Sound Effects
• AI Video Generation
• AI Captioning, Translation and Dubbing

While our AI Policy for Video Production isn't exhaustive and will change over time, it provides us with a carefully considered way forward. Hammering out these issues was not easy and involved research, understanding of the technologies involved, discussion, and compromise. Notably, we did not use AI in any part of the writing of our policy. We hope this blog post and our AI Policy are helpful to our customers and other creative agencies.
